I wasnât totally sure because I hadnât really listened to it much even in my old life on Earth, but what sounded like classical music was playing in the ballroom, piping out of a magical item that looked like a gramophone. It wasnât a real ballroom, though; that was just the best way I could describe the space Nell and I were currently in, with the wall bordering the castleâs courtyard having been removed. She was acting as my dance partner-slash-teacher as we practiced how to dance.
âMr. Yuki, stop rushing. Take it slow.â
She giggled while instructing me.
âGah! D-Dammit!â
âNo, no. Youâre stiffening up again.â
Nell was grinning like an idiot, clearly enjoying herself as she pulled me by the hand and spun us around leisurely. I tried my best to follow her lead and match her movements, but it was very possible that I lacked a talent for dancing. For one thing, I definitely wasnât used to it. For another, ever since weâd started, Iâd somehow kept stepping on my own feet. Thereâd even been a few times where Iâd damn near tripped over myself and fallen. Despite the slow dance movements, I was having an unexpectedly hard time syncing my body to the rhythm of the music.
âAnother thing to note, Mr. Yuki. We generally only dance during banquets and celebrations. Naturally, the upcoming event falls under this category. So your expression mustnât be so strained. Smile, please. Smile!â
âNh...â
Sheâs expecting way too much of me. This is nuts. I didnât say that out loud, of course. Instead, I forced my facial muscles to do as she said and fashion a smile. An ever so cool, cover-of-GQ-handsome, refreshing demon lord smile. I was sure it would win the hearts of women and children everywhere. Heh. Sorry, folks. My heart already belongs to several women, so I canât accept your love.
âOn second thought, maybe it would be best if you didnât smile. I feel like someone walked over my grave.â
âCripes, youâre not even gonna pull your punches?!â
My shock was completely genuine, and I retorted without even thinking. Nell cackled in response.
âForgive me. But itâs important to act natural instead of being self-conscious and creating a facade. I realize this is your first time at such a social event, though, so I understand. Just try your best to stay relaxed. Keep your expression calm. That should be enough to smooth your way through any interactions.â
âO-Okay, got it. Iâll try.â
Nell was unexpectedly knowledgeable about etiquette and stuff, most likely on account of her role as a hero keeping her in constant contact with the royal family. So I meekly obeyed, deferring to her expertise in this area.
It was probably easy to guess why I was even bothering to practice dancingâsomething that was very much uncharacteristic of me. Just like the formal attire Iâd bought in town, the dance lessons were in preparation for the upcoming ball. For as much as I obviously didnât give a damn about what this countryâs aristocracy thought of me, the fact remained that, in human society, a servantâs behavior reflected directly on their master.
